With rising gas and electricity prices, many French households are choosing to use firewood to save money.
In a firewood company in Aureville (Haute-Garonne), the log cutting machine worked at full speed this summer. For months, orders have been pouring in for fear of running out, but also to avoid paying a high price as winter approaches. Customers want to be served as soon as possible. The price per stere has increased by an average of 20% over the past two years. Here, it sells for 85 euros, or 10 euros more than last year. A price that still allows it to remain less expensive than gas or electricity.
A father opted for firewood. At the beginning of July, he ordered five cubic meters which cost him 425 euros. “By doing our calculations, we estimated that wood would cost us less and perhaps also that we will be able to manage more easily with wood than with electric heating on a slightly more sustainable consumption”, he explains. With soaring gas and electricity prices, the wood trend should not run out of steam. Stove sales are up 50% in 2021.
