The two children were at a residence in the Peguis First Nation, about 185 km north of Winnipeg, on Monday evening when “they had access to a firearm,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police statement said.
“The 4-year-old child discharged the firearm, and a 6-year-old child was hit,” she adds, adding that the vital prognosis of the victim, who was taken to hospital, was not engaged.
A man has been arrested and faces a charge for illegal possession of firearms.
Five firearms, a crossbow and ammunition were seized by the police at the scene of the tragedy.
