“A fire is in progress rue Saint-Jacques, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. The Paris firefighters intervene. Please do not interfere with their intervention and avoid the sector,” French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin tweeted.
A snapshot taken by an AFP photographer showed a plume of smoke and flames rising from the ruins of a building.
Seven injured are in “absolute emergency” and nine in “relative emergency”, according to an initial assessment of the police chief.
According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, “a building caught fire and partially collapsed” rue Saint-Jacques, a few streets from the Panthéon and the Luxembourg Gardens.
“There is nothing to determine the origin of the disaster” at this stage, said the prosecution.
