(Samammish) Amy Yang built a huge lead and overcame late errors to earn her long-awaited first major title, a three-shot victory at the LPGA Championship on Sunday.
Yang closed with a 72 at Club Sahalee for a total of 281, minus seven.
She was nearly perfect through 15 holes, hitting 10 shots under par and taking a seven-shot cushion into the lead.
She then experienced some trouble, but no rival was able to really threaten her.
“I can’t find the words,” said Yang, quoted by the women’s circuit website. I always wanted to win a major tournament. It represents the hard work of an entire team and I am very grateful. »
At 34 years and almost 11 months, Yang is the oldest to win a major LPGA tournament since 2018 (Angela Stanford at 40, at the Evian Championship).
Anna Nordqvist was 34 years old and just over two months old when she triumphed at the British Open in 2021.
It was 75e departure of Yang in a major tournament (the Evian in question was the 76e prestigious Stanford tournament).
Yang’s sixth career victory is his first since last November at the CME Group Championship.
Yang will participate in the Paris Olympics, where she will represent South Korea for a third time.
Lilia Vu (71), Jin Young Ko (71) and Miyu Yamashita (73) finished in second place, four under.
Canadian Brooke Henderson finished 22e after a 73, for 291.
