While humanity has consumed all the resources that nature takes a year to produce and renew, some farmers are trying to convert their farms into land that is beneficial for the planet.
Agricultural production accounts for 19% of our greenhouse gas emissions. Aware of this phenomenon, some farmers have decided to adopt a logic of sustainable development by transforming their property into a low-carbon farm. One of the solutions is to provide greenery and grasslands that store carbon in the soil. Certain types of plantations, rich in nitrogen, also act as green manure to avoid having to feed the soil with chemicals.
Over five years, Gilles Durlin, president of the AOPen Dairy should reduce his carbon footprint by 65 tonnes. If he has replaced his cereals with grasslands, he can now sell carbon credits to companies that must offset their greenhouse gas emissions. Cooperatives also offer assessments that allow operators wishing to develop their practice to gauge themselves.
