After the earthquake in Morocco on the night of Friday to Saturday, the number of victims rose above 2,000 dead with just as many injured. 36 hours later, the hope of finding survivors is weakening.
In the ruins of their village, the inhabitants search for their neighbors themselves, with the help of volunteers and construction equipment. They intervene with caution because they know that people are under the rubble. In this mountainous province, it is difficult to distinguish where the houses were before the earthquake, as rubble invades the space. Residents are often alone in the face of devastation. Some still have a roof but the damage is very significant.
The army and emergency services on site
“The wall cracked and everything fell to the ground. I had to flee with my children into the street. Then, I learned that my neighbor was under the rubble so I went to help her”, says a man. A neighbor who survived but lost the few possessions she had. The army and rescuers are gradually reaching these remote locations. In each of them, the task seems infinite. For now, images of survivors emerging from the rubble are rare. The number of deaths, now more than 2,000, continues to rise.
