Real estate developer Devimco begins construction of the first skyscraper in the Montreal suburbs, a 33-story tower above the Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke metro station.
Named Myral, the building should include 555 housing units, as well as commercial spaces. Devimco carried out the first shovelful of earth on Tuesday for this tower, which will culminate at 107 meters.
“It’s a skyscraper. It’s not New York at 180 floors, but for the South Shore it’s a skyscraper,” said James Goulet, of Devimco, in an interview. “It’s the only metro station on the entire South Shore. The enthusiasm is there and it is certain that to have a tower this high, it requires demand. »
Mr. Goulet praised the City of Longueuil’s welcome for the project. “The municipal administration clearly understood that one of the ways to respond to the housing crisis and the ecological crisis was to stop urban sprawl and increase density in places already served by structuring public transport” , he said. “We feel that we have an administration that is very proactive. […] There is an agility in Longueuil that is somewhat unmatched. »
The project is valued at 230 million. The first deliveries of housing are expected by 2027. Mr. Goulet indicated that Devimco did not yet know whether some of the units would be offered for rental.
THE Myral constitutes the second phase of a real estate complex which already has a 25-story tower under construction. In total, the two towers will have more than 1,000 residential units.
Mr. Goulet indicated that the area around the Longueuil metro station was in full redevelopment and that other towers could be expected to emerge soon.
