I would be the worst player in television competition LOL: who will laugh last? of Amazon Prime Video, where the host-arbitrator Patrick Huard, even more severe than the two robot judges of MasterChef Quebecexpels the participants at the slightest grin on their face.
A fart joke, a person tumbling down the steps or a slice of orange cheese smeared on the cheek, sorry, it makes me die of laughter and I break it, like the coffee cup that was fatal for poor Mariana Mazza.
The latter, a better loser than on New Year’s Eve Big Brother Celebritieshas also broken the world record of all the franchises of LOL: who will laugh last? earning a yellow card after less than two minutes of action, out of a total of six hours. I can understand her. When we are forbidden from giggling or laughing, it becomes even more difficult to hold back giggles.
When I put in the episodes of LOL, wrapped in an electric blanket, I try to remain impassive, stony, frozen, in short, like watching Martin Matte’s talk show sketches. Cheek biting, fish mouth and guttural scream, nothing works, red card, I will be kicked out of the loft.
Respect, therefore, for the person (like Richardson Zéphir and Laurent Paquin, last year) who endured six hours of stupid jokes, ugly wigs and pure delirium without flinching.
The second edition of LOL, entirely available on Amazon Prime Video, raises the bar in comparison with the first. It’s really funny and very well designed.
One thing, however, does not change: the first three episodes of LOL remain punchier than the last three. At the beginning, it explodes with nonsense, the competitors viciously set traps and pull out all the stops (not Dominic’s, rest assured). In the end, fatigue sets in and the survivors wander around the shambles like zombies, completely disconnected from their inner clown.
The ten recruits for the 2024 edition arrive better prepared than those of last season. They are Mariana Mazza, Philippe Laprise, Katherine Levac, Pier-Luc Funk, Rosalie Vaillancourt, Stéphane Rousseau, Fabien Cloutier, Neev, Roxane Bruneau and Tai TL.
Like the uninhibited Mariana Mazza, who admitted not knowing him at all, many of us scratched our heads: but who is that, Tai TL? He is a 21-year-old Montreal comedian of Haitian origin, real name Tailaire Laguerre, a star of the TikTok platform.
Of the ten candidates in the running, Tai TL was the least effective, I think. His numbers took off with pain and misery.
Roxane Bruneau didn’t shine very well either. We felt she was very impressed to rub shoulders with stars of Quebec humor. And she doesn’t have the same comedic reflexes as her comrades, it must be said.
On the other hand, the duo formed by Rosalie Vaillancourt and Katherine Levac was formidable, especially during their group attacks on targets to be taken down.
Big favorite, also, for Stéphane Rousseau, who gave the best performance, disguised as a giant penis. You should know that in LOL : who will laugh last?the participants also concoct individual numbers, which they perform on the small stage of the manor.
The goal is obviously to eliminate your colleagues by making them laugh. The self-defense sequence imagined by Pier-Luc Funk (with the participation of Hugo Girard) ranks high in the charts of LOLjust like Rosalie Vaillancourt’s mime-gymnast number, completely absurd and bizarre.
On the other hand, Roxane Bruneau imitated a clairvoyant who read the future in women’s balls – don’t look for the second degree – and it was far from successful.
Among the most captivating competitors to follow is Philippe Laprise. The 47-year-old comedian is not the most agile in stand-up, but his facial expressions, facial reactions and physical performance make him unavoidable and dangerous for others.
Without giving anything away, we quickly see that the comedians who have done their homework, or who arrive with props, leave with a head start. Whether it’s a phallic-shaped fake navel, a collection of dried foreskins, a Mentos tablet in a Coke bottle, or smoked meat tucked into underwear, these elements joyfully spice up the part.
Yes, it’s sometimes pee-poo and very nono. To get a laugh, all blows, especially those below the belt, are permitted and encouraged. The host-executioner Patrick Huard, perfect in this role of the person responsible for the discipline, admits that the Quebec version of LOL enforces the rules as strictly as possible. Honestly, this regulatory rigidity is getting annoying.
Players who get pinched barely smile when catching a ball or react spontaneously when the phone rings. We’re talking about trifles here. It’s frankly boring to see one of your favorite people leave for such a trivial thing.
As long as you’re going to be ousted, it’s better to do it wholeheartedly. Isn’t that right, Mariana Mazza?
