The toll is increasing by the hour in Morocco, 48 hours after the earthquake. In total, more than 2,200 people died, including four French people.

Rescuers extract a body from the lifeless rubble. Amizmiz, a small town near the epicenter, was hit hard. Half of the residents died, and none of the houses survived the earthquake. Images of survivors are increasingly rare and have given way to burial scenes. “We are living in a crisis. We ask that King Mohamed VI intervene (…) we are experiencing a traumatic situation”says a resident.

Refugees in the camps

In the villages, residents search for their neighbors themselves, using construction equipment. Bodies lie under the rubble. The damage is significant, and the survivors have lost everything. “I couldn’t escape because the roof fell on me”, says a survivor. On-site assistance is organized in Asni, where the survivors are housed. Help arrived with food. Not enough for everyone.
