The association of mayors of Indre-et-Loire has launched a consultation with its members to identify the attacks of which they are victims. 42.5% said they had already been attacked since 2020. Local elected officials seem to be suffering the consequences of successive and cumulative crises.

The medical office of the mayor of Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (Indre-et-Loire) was burned down in September. Another city councilor was shot and wounded in Cher in October. The number and degree of intensity of acts of violence appear to be on the increase in recent times. “A person grabbed me and tried to knock me down, insulting me, in the street”says Pierre-Alain Roiron, mayor of Langeais (Indre-et-Loire).

Mostly verbal abuse

The association of mayors of Indre-et-Loire launched a consultation with its members in the fall. 42.5% said they had already been assaulted since 2020. This violence was verbal in 90% of cases, and less than a third of elected officials dared to file a complaint. Local elected officials seem to suffer the consequences of successive and cumulative crises. For Pierre Allorant, political scientist, national elected officials are far from the expected role of exemplarity: “When we talk about an assassin in the National Assembly, when we stage gestures on videos, symbolic of course, but of violence against elected officials or ministers, I think we are crossing the yellow line.
