As the World Cup begins on November 20 in Doha, Qatar’s influence has grown in recent years beyond sport. If criticism of the emirate is increasing, the links between Doha and Paris are in good shape. This is the subject of Talk franceinfo. Every evening from 6 p.m., Manon Mella and her guests debate with Internet users on the franceinfo Twitch channel.

For several decades, the influence on the world of Qatar, a small kingdom in the Persian Gulf, has developed and now seems indisputable. If one often evokes its influence on world football allowed by the financial power of the royal family which rules the emirate, the network of influence of Qatar goes well beyond the sports field.

Franck Ballanger and Christian Chesnot from the international editorial staff of Radio France and authors of an audio and video series for franceinfo entitled “Doha-sur-Seine: Qatar in search of influence” are in the Talk franceinfo. Manon Mella also receives Quentin Müller, reporter specializing in the Arabian Peninsula and co-author with Sébastian Castellier of the book The Oilman’s Slavespublished by Marchialy (2022).

Diplomacy, luxury industry or real estate investment, beyond its footballing influence, Qatar has established itself in France from Paris to the Côte d’Azur. With its energy resources, the small gas monarchy maintains often decried links with France.

These relationships are not new. For nearly half a century, France and Qatar have shared interests at different levels. In the energy sector, for example, the symbol of economic continuity between Doha and Paris is embodied by Total. Qatar also announced in September 2022 the signing of a major contract with the French oil company.

Join us from 6 p.m. Monday to Friday on the franceinfo Twitch channel to participate in Manon Mella’s Talk. An hour of exchange, clarification, debate around topical and social issues.
