Like his ministers, Legault is under close surveillance

In recent years, François Legault seemed to walk on water. Nothing could stop him, even when the CAQ was going through more difficult times, it was always at the top in the polls.

However, over the past six months or so, things have been different. The blunders are noted by the population and an alternative, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, is taking more and more space in the hearts of Quebecers.

In the fall, François Legault confirmed that he wanted to ask the population for a third mandate. Now he must ask himself the question, if he is the best person to lead the CAQ in 2026.

Breakdown of trust

In 2022, voters voted for the CAQ, but this mandate came with extremely high expectations.

Today, Quebecers are very disappointed, they even have the feeling of being betrayed by the CAQ government. Because, regardless of the subject, voters do not feel that the province is moving in the right direction.

Now, the CAQ is condemned to deliver the goods. Otherwise, it will be replaced. Trust is broken, it can be regained, but it will take a long time.

The Caquistes cannot take the latest polls lightly. However, seeing François Legault with his caucus in Sherbrooke last week, we can doubt that the CAQ understood the population’s message.

Future

The CAQ is François Legault, he is the cornerstone of his party. Now he will be less present in the media. So, if the CAQ recovers, it will be partly thanks to the work of its ministers.

François Legault’s entourage says that the ministers are under close surveillance (during an evaluation period), with a view to a reshuffle in the second portion of 2024.

But it is François Legault who will pass the biggest test in the next six months. Subsequently, we will see if he will be present for the final exam on October 5, 2026.
