The Voidz, the other group of Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, offers an intriguing third album, with an almost ceremonial dimension. If the first piece of Like All Before You, Square Waveattracts attention by offering a melancholy melody which is truly new wave, Prophecy of the Dragon appears to be a successful laboratory for mixing genres. THE riffs of metal added with futuristic electronic sounds captivate and subjugate. The record can be listened to religiously, looking for the slightest variation in musical atmosphere, and we find elements of 1980s pop as well as hard rock (Spectral Analysis, Flexorcist). Of course, Like All Before You is indeed an entity belonging to Julian Casablancas, who, as we are now accustomed to, uses and abuses vocal effects… Do the overflowing creativity and experiments of The Voidz reflect a certain audacity or a lack of of consistency? It’s up to the listener to judge.
