Food: lighter chips thanks to Nutri-score

(France 2)

Many packets of crisps display a Nutri-score of “B” or “C”, or even “A” for certain brands. Previously, it was more “D” or “E”. To improve their score, they lowered the salt and saturated fat content.

The market for chips is flourishing and aims to be good for health. Dozens of packages in a grocery store display Nutri-scores of “B” or “C”, much better than before, where there were instead poor grades of “D” and “E”. They were too fatty and too salty. Some brands have gone to such lengths that they even get an “A”. A feat for chips.

A decreasing risk of cardiovascular disease

Professor Boris Hansel, endocrinologist at Bichat hospital (AP-HP), notes that manufacturers have improved their chips by lowering the salt and saturated fat content. “In countries where the Nutri-score is not established, the products do not improve”, he emphasizes. A notable improvement for chips sold in France, because the risk of cardiovascular disease decreases when you reduce the consumption of salt and saturated fats.
