(Ottawa) Liberal MP Greg Fergus was elected Speaker of the House of Commons by all MPs.
He succeeds former President Anthony Rota, who was forced to resign last week after causing an unprecedented diplomatic incident by inviting a former Nazi soldier to attend Ukraine President Volodymy Zelensky’s speech to the Parliament.
In all, seven deputies were running for the presidency of the House of Commons, which is the arbiter of parliamentary contests and must ensure compliance with the rules.
Member of Parliament for Hull-Aylmer since 2015, Mr. Fergus thus becomes the first racialized elected official to occupy these positions.
