“Les Combattantes”, the new feminist blockbuster from TF1

Three years ago, TF1 scored a big hit with Charity Bazaara historical blockbuster in costumes, set in late 19th century Paris, which followed the fate of women after the fire that ravaged the Parisian department store.

Given the success, the channel is back with The Fighters. Same feminist theme, we follow four destinies of women. Same actresses, Audrey Fleurot as a prostitute in a brothel, Julie de Bona as mother superior of a convent, Camille Lou as a wanted killer, to which is added Sofia Essaidi. The period changes: we are at the dawn of the First World War.

The series does not tell the war, but the women during the war. Same director too, hand-held camera who knows how to follow the action. Alexander Lawrence. His desire this time was to make a series that takes place during the war, but which is not necessarily in the trenches :

“There was the fantasy of being able to make a war film for several reasons. I find that war exacerbates feelings, and that it is a vector of strong emotions. Here, we are at the back of the war, we talk about how we organize ourselves, how do we create barriers? How do we learn to do what we didn’t do before?”

Camille Lou plays this time a murderess on the run, who will become a surgeon. This is the feminist purpose of the series The Fighters who liked him: “I think that’s the period when it was starting to happen, but until then women weren’t allowed to go to medical school. They had to do dressings and bandages in hospitals, that’s is all.”

Sofia Essaidi embodies the wife of a company boss who has gone to war. The filming of a period film interested him: “Because I also wanted to know what it was like, to play in costumes with reconstructions of sets, with extras, soldiers, horses everywhere. There is like that a little playful, magical side It’s weird because we talk about war, but as a person, as an actor, to wake up in the morning, to come out of your dressing room and see all that around you, it’s rare .”

Breath, great resources, Laurent Gerra as an abbot, Tom Leeb as a surgeon, Audrey Fleurot as a prostitute, Sandrine Bonnaire as a despicable mother-in-law, but a slow story to start. The Fighters : 8 episodes from this Monday, September 19 on TF1.
