Prime Minister François Legault received the support of 98.61% of activists from the Coalition avenir Québec on Sunday after a vote of confidence held after a difficult sequence marked by the decision not to build highway tunnel between Quebec and Lévis.
In 2014, during a similar exercise, François Legault obtained 97.2%. The 2020 vote of confidence had been canceled due to the pandemic.
In front of his activists, Mr. Legault said that the last thing he would want would be to disappoint his activists. He pointed out that the exercise of power comes with its share of difficult decisions.
“This pat on the back that you give me makes me feel good,” he told activists.
The result of the vote of confidence was revealed before the end of a two-day congress bringing together activists.
“I don’t know if I saw the right number. It touches me especially coming from you guys,” he told activists.
“My mom is going to be proud of me,” he said, also marking Mother’s Day.
In March, PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon obtained 98.5% in a vote of confidence from his activists.
In a closing speech, Mr. Legault put forward the importance for the nationalists to have access to power with the CAQ to act now.
In particular, he targeted his opponents from the Parti Québécois (PQ), whose latest polls indicate that they are on the rise, now second behind the CAQ in the polls and first in the Quebec region, precisely after the announcement concerning the Quebec tunnel. -Lévis, which will not be open to cars, but will be used for public transport.
“The problem with the PQ is that they are betting everything on the Grand Soir de la Souveraineté,” he said. The PQ tell us that we must protect secularism, that we must protect our language. On that we agree. »
According to Mr. Legault, the CAQ is the largest gathering of nationalists on the Quebec political spectrum, which makes it possible to take concrete action.
“We must act now, and to act now, we must be in government. Then to be in government, you have to gather enough people, enough nationalists. »
