MENTAL HEALTH

Cry of the heart

Entrepreneurs admitting to being overworked are on the rise as the covid marathon has dragged on for 22 months. “Business leaders are supposed to be cheerleaders [cheerleaders]. But we give so much and for so long! I’m totally gutted,” admits Mike Johnston, CEO of software company REDspace. He says many of the leaders he talks to are like him exhausted and considering jumping ship, due to the pandemic and the feeling that they won’t be able to take care of the mental health of their employees. “The game is no longer worth the candle,” he says.

Altruism is not a way of doing things because there is a need. It is an art of living. He must be present at all times.

THE NUMBER

66%

This is the proportion of Quebec workers who say they feel that their employer is making efforts to retain them. The labor shortage and burnout caused by the pandemic are causing many workers to reconsider their position and what they get out of the job. In the past year, 44% of Quebecers have considered quitting, according to a survey by Indeed. They want more flexibility, a less stressful job, which promotes teleworking and in a sector “that has a positive impact on the community”, we read in a press release.

THE BOARD

Authenticity

Professor Éric Brunelle details what an authentic leader is, how to achieve it and the benefits of being one, in the journal Management from HEC Montreal. He talks about the importance of being true to yourself, while being transparent, having a sense of ethics and building relationships based on honesty. “We exercise our leadership with the personality we have,” explains the associate professor in the management department of HEC Montréal. “The best thing we can do to be successful is to be true. You have to know yourself as a person, know our faults and our blind spots. Employees know that an authentic leader “isn’t perfect, but [savent] also that what he says is true “.
