Laval University professors call an indefinite general strike

The approximately 1,280 unionized professors at Université Laval launched an indefinite general strike on Monday, because there is no indication that the negotiations of the last few hours between the management of the institution and the Union of Professors of Laval University (SPUL) have allowed to avoid it.

On March 2, the teachers adopted in a general assembly, at 94.5%, a strike mandate to begin on March 13. The union then claimed that nearly three-quarters of its members were present at the meeting.

The most recent collective agreement for SPUL members expired on 1er last December. Raising the employment floor, equitable distribution of positions, increased administrative support, better work-life balance and workload management are part of the SPUL’s demands.

Université Laval rector Sophie D’Amours urged union members not to demand working conditions on behalf of all their colleagues across the country, saying Université Laval does not have the revenues of other Canadian universities .

Management reports that only the activities offered by SPUL members will be affected by the strike, whether they are in the presence or at a distance. The list of affected activities for the next week is available.
