Nearly $3.8 million was recovered Friday by the City of Laval from the businesses of fallen construction magnate Tony Accurso after the settlement of a dispute, bringing the total amount recovered from the city to more than $60 million. corruption.
According to the City, the total amount of sums recovered by the Accurso Group is around $12 million.
“This is an important chapter for the City of Laval and I am happy to see such a sum of money recovered, because it goes to Laval citizens,” said Mayor Stéphane Boyer in a press release.
A complete report on the actions and lawsuits carried out over the past seven years will be tabled this fall by the City’s specialized team. It brings together several investigators, some of whom come from the Charbonneau commission.
“Set up in 2016, this team dedicated to analysis aims to prosecute the actors of corruption and recover the sums due to give them to Laval residents,” said the City.
The City of Laval had started legal proceedings in 2014 to recover the money that was involved in acts of corruption.
Nearly $50 million had already been recovered when Mayor Marc Demers was in power in 2019.
Of this total, $9 million had been recovered directly from former mayor Gilles Vaillancourt, who had been found guilty in 2016 of breach of trust, fraud and conspiracy for the awarding of certain public contracts from 1996 to 2010.
