The 88-year-old woman was a passenger in the vehicle carrying seven people when, for some undetermined reason, the swerve occurred around 4 p.m. on Route 323, northbound.

“According to initial information, a 54-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle before swerving and ending up in the ditch. Seven people were in the vehicle. The extrication pliers were requested in order to extirpate them, ”said information officer Nicolas Scholtus, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

“An 88-year-old lady is in critical condition and there are fears for her life. A 52-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman reportedly suffered serious injuries, but there is no fear for their lives, ”said the SQ spokesperson.

They were taken to hospital, along with the four other people, aged 50 to 54, who escaped with minor injuries.

No hypothesis was immediately favored to explain the tragedy, but the vehicle involved in this swerve was “regulatory” to accommodate all these passengers.

“An investigator and a collision investigation officer were dispatched to the scene to shed light on the causes and circumstances of this event,” said Mr. Scholtus.

Route 323 was closed at Chemin Saint-Louis to allow the police to do their job. It reopened to traffic around 6 p.m.

The SQ investigation is continuing.
