Near Las Vegas, Lake Mead is visibly drying up. It now contains times less water than in the 1970s. With this drying up, crimes carried out by the mafia are resurfacing.

The mafia thought its well-kept secrets in the reputedly deep waters of Lake Mead, Nevada (United States). It is the largest artificial lake in the country. But the water is dropping drastically from year to year. The lake now lets what was engulfed before reappear, like a wreck. But also corpses. Three bodies were found on the shore within a few months. The majority of the victims drowned accidentally, but a gruesome discovery made headlines. In May, a barrel of gnawed wood washed up on the shore. Inside was the body of a man who had been shot in the head. According to investigators, he was dumped in the lake in the late 1970s.

“Putting bodies in barrels is something the Mafia has done for years and years. This lake is the closest water to Las Vegas and it was deep so it made sense to get rid of it there.”Explain Geoff Schumacher historian at the Las Vegas Mafia Museum. Historians’ suspicions focus on Anthony Spilotroalready suspected of 25 murders. He was never convicted and was himself murdered before the end of his last trial. The victim could be an employee of the stardustone of the leading hotels of the time used by the mafia as a cover for money laundering. This man was just supposed to take customers to the marina at Lake Mead. He disappeared after a secret lunch. The autopsy of the body is still in progress, and this, for at least a year.
