Heatwave: labor law adapts to heat waves
Heatwave: labor law adapts to heat waves
(France 2)

For construction workers, the heatwave has become a reason for technical unemployment. For other professions, the employer must respect obligations.

Despite around thirty degrees in the shade, workers on a construction site in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne) are working in the full sun on Tuesday, July 9. Construction companies are getting used to dealing with the heat, as the problem is becoming more and more frequent. In the sector, heatwaves are a reason for technical unemployment for workers, as were snow, frost and wind.

After noticing that the heat is too high on the construction site, “We send the workers home and they will still be paid as if they had worked”explains Hugo Pastorello, site manager “Thomas and Danizan”. Employees will only be compensated from the second day. This is a major step forward for construction workers. For other professions, no maximum temperature is indicated in the Labor Code. The employer is required to renew the air in closed premises or to distribute water. A company adopts staggered hours in the event of extreme heat.
