After several days of discussions, La France insoumise and Europe Ecologie-Les Verts succeeded, on the night of Sunday to Monday May 2, to an agreement in view of the legislative elections, under the banner of the “New Popular Ecological and Social Union”. A hundred constituencies, out of 577 in total, are thus reserved for environmental candidates, pending possible additional alliances with the Socialist Party and the Communist Party.
Three weeks after the first round of the presidential election and the elimination of Jean-Luc Mélenchon “to 420,000 votes” near, in the words of the ex-candidate, on Sunday, La France insoumise therefore manages to conclude a second agreement with a left-wing party, after Génération.s, on Thursday. It was allowed by a favorable vote of the Federal Council of EELV, which ratified this text in the night from Sunday to Monday, after long days of negotiations, carried out until the beginning of the evening. In total, 84 representatives of EELV voted for this text, 10 against and eight white.
The discussions seemed blocked for a time, while the ecologists in favor of this union had to deal with the reluctance of Yannick Jadot, EELV candidate for the presidential election and opposed to a coalition “rear” Jean-Luc Melenchon. “It will not work”he explained earlier this week about an alliance led by the leader of LFI.
Despite this position, criticized in part of the environmental ranks, the discussions continued throughout the week. The programmatic disagreements, which related in particular to the European question, have been settled, according to the two parties. During these negotiations, the various delegations of negotiators also discussed the division of constituencies, the mode of organization of the alliance or the common banner displayed by the candidates of this union.
After this agreement with EELV, La France insoumise could conclude two other agreements at the beginning of the week. The first would be with the Socialist Party, which negotiated all day Sunday with LFI, despite the opposition of several party leaders, including those close to François Hollande. The second would see the French Communist Party (PCF) join the ranks of this “New Popular Ecologist and Social Union”, but the discussions were less advanced on Sunday evening. The two parties must continue negotiations with La France insoumise from Monday May 2.
