Faced with Russian firepower, these long-range weapons are vital for kyiv. Ukraine says it has received new multiple rocket launcher systems from the United States and Germany. A total of four new American HiMars rocket launchers and the first of a batch of German Mars II arrived in Ukraine, Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said on Twitter. kyiv routinely calls for these armaments, believing they can alter the dynamics on the battlefield.

Oleksiï Reznikov said to himself “grateful” vis-à-vis President Joe Biden and his American counterpart Lloyd Austin for having “reinforced” the Ukrainian army. “We have proven to be smart operators of these weapons. The sound of the HiMars volley has become this summer’s major hit on the front lines”, he added. To date, the United States has delivered about twenty HiMars systems to Ukraine, as part of its aid program against the Russian attack. The Minister of Defense also thanked his German counterpart, Christine Lambrecht, on behalf of the Ukrainian gunners, who “welcome our German partners”.

The arrival of Western long-range artillery systems changed the situation. “They make it possible to strike deeper into occupied territory than other artillery systems, and thus target strategic points such as fuel depots, ammunition or Russian logistics and maintenance platforms”explained to franceinfo Christine Dugoin-Clément, researcher associated with the “risks” chair of the IAE research laboratory at Paris-Sorbonne Business School.

Last month, Minister Oleksiï Reznikov asked Washington to send more of these artillery pieces, saying that they had been used to destroy about 30 Russian command posts and ammunition depots. According to him, Ukraine needs at least 100 units for an effective counter-offensive against Moscow’s troops.

Washington salutes the“excellent” use of HiMars by the Ukrainian army. By contrast, the White House has so far refused to deliver long-range systems to Ukraine that could reach Russia, despite repeated requests from kyiv.
