Parents have the right to call their son Hades, confirmed the court of Saint-Malo, in Ille-et-Vilaine, Friday April 14, learned France Bleu Armorique.

The child was born on September 19, 2022 in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine). At first, the city court objected to his first name. Hades, in Greek mythology, is the god of death and the underworld. The choice of the first name made a civil registrar wink and the Saint-Malo prosecutor asked for the first name to be deleted from the child’s birth certificate because it was deemed contrary to his interests. The parents said they had chosen this first name because they found it “pretty” and because the father was Colombian, the first name being pronounced the same way in French and Spanish.

The parents, Kristina and Rodrigo, therefore seized a family affairs judge. The decision was to be made on April 4, but the first magistrate was on sick leave. The second judge therefore ruled that the first name Hades was legal. “It’s a sigh of relief” reacts the young mother. The Saint-Malo public prosecutor’s office could appeal the decision.
