The restoration of electrical service to the tens of thousands of Hydro-Québec subscribers who lost power at the weekend continues on Monday.
As of 5 a.m., just over 32,000 state-owned utility customers were still without power. By Sunday evening, that number was over 80,000.
The regions that remained the most affected by the blackouts on Monday morning were those of Lanaudière, with more than 16,000 subscribers without electricity, compared to just over 9,000 in the Laurentians and 4,250 on the island of Montreal.
Severe thunderstorms that moved across Quebec on Sunday were the cause of these numerous outages. Hydro-Québec explains that they were partly caused by the triggering of protective equipment due to the lightning that accompanied the storms.
Tree branches also came into contact with the electricity distribution network, causing outages.
A hundred workers are hard at work to restore service as quickly as possible, according to Hydro-Quebec.
