New heat record. June was the hottest month ever recorded, breaking a recent record, that of 2023.
Global warming is still at work. June 2024 was marked by a new monthly heat record, both on land and on the surface of the oceans. According to the European Copernicus Observatory, monthly temperature records have been broken every month since June 2023. June 2024 is no exception, with an average temperature of 16.66°C. An increase of 0.67°C compared to the 1991-2020 average for the month of June and 0.14°C more than the previous record set in June 2023.
A month of June marked by intense heatwaves in China, India, Mexico, Greece and Saudi Arabia, where more than 1,300 people died during the pilgrimage to Mecca. While the thermometer was close to or below seasonal norms (1991-2020) in Western Europe, as in France, a large part of humanity suffered temperatures above the norms, even exceptional.
