Julianne Moore has been selected to chair the jury for this year’s Venice International Film Festival competition, festival director Alberto Barbera announced on Friday.
Updated yesterday at 10:31 a.m.
The Oscar-winning actress will chair a jury made up of French director Audrey Diwan, whose film The event won the Golden Lion last year, from author Kazuo Ishiguro (never let me go) and Iranian actress Leila Hatami (A separation). The jury will also include Italian director Leonardo Di Costanzo, Argentinian filmmaker Mariano Cohn and Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen.
All will head to the Lido next month to decide the main winners of the festival, including the winner of the Golden Lion for Best Picture and the Silver Lion for Best Director, which often set the tone for the upcoming awards season.
Last year, Jane Campion received the Silver Lion for her film The Power of the Dog by a jury chaired by Bong Joon Ho. Jane Campion then won the Oscar for best director. It’s one of seven times in the past decade that the director of a film that premiered in Venice has also won the Best Director Oscar in the same season.
This year’s slate of films will be revealed later this month. The 79e Venice International Film Festival will run from August 31 to September 10.
