Judicial investigation opened for “murder by spouse” after the death of a woman in her sixties in Calvados

The suspect, who was taken into custody, “declares that he has, to this day, no recollection of what happened,” the Caen public prosecutor announced on Wednesday.

A judicial investigation for “murder by spouse” was opened after the death of a woman in her sixties, stabbed at her home on Saturday in Baron-sur-Odon (Calvados), and her husband was taken into custody, the Caen prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday July 31. The suspect “declares that to this day he has no recollection of how the events unfolded”added Joël Garrigue, public prosecutor of Caen, to AFP.

The victim was stabbed to death on Saturday, July 27 at her home in Baron-sur-Odon, according to the magistrate, confirming information from local media. According to these local media, this 69-year-old woman had been living for about twenty years in this Normandy town of a thousand inhabitants with her partner, aged 74, and had reportedly expressed her desire to divorce.

The man was taken injured to the Caen University Hospital and was taken into police custody on Monday. On average, a femicide occurs every three days in France. According to the Minister of Justice, Eric Dupond-Moretti, there will be 94 femicides in 2023, compared to 118 in 2022.
