Hunter Biden has “knowingly made a false statement” according to documents published by the American justice system. The son of President Joe Biden was indicted on Thursday, September 14, at the federal level for illegal possession of a firearm. The facts with which he is accused date back to 2018: in order to obtain a revolver, he declared that he did not suffer from addiction even though he admitted to having used drugs at that time.

This is a setback for the Biden family: in June, the son of the Democratic president reached an initial negotiated agreement with a special prosecutor. This agreement reduced the chances of him having to stand trial, while his father is a candidate for re-election next year. A judge expressed doubts about the validity of this agreement, which has now become void, opening the way to a trial.

Hunter Biden is targeted by the Trumpist camp which accuses him of corruption. It is his business carried out in China and Ukraine while his father was Barack Obama’s vice-president that he is particularly criticized for. If found guilty at the end of the trial, Joe Biden’s son faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. The president has always assured him of his support, claiming to have “faith in him”.
