It almost looked like a Stations of the Cross. US President Joe Biden marched slowly on Sunday, May 29, past large portraits of the children killed Tuesday at a school in Uvalde, Texas. Accompanied by his wife Jill Biden, he meditated and signed in front of an improvised memorial near the site of the killing, decorated with crosses bearing the names of the victims, flowers and stuffed animals.
The First Lady laid a bouquet in front of a small brick wall bearing the name of Robb Elementary School. Then the couple, wearing dark suits and dark glasses, walked over to a row of large photos adorned with white flowers, showing the faces of the slain children, aged between 9 and 11. Nineteen children and two teachers fell under the bullets of Salvador Ramos, himself barely 18 years old.
They reviewed them, Joe Biden shaking his head at one point, as if still in disbelief at the tragedy, while Jill Biden touched each face with a caress. The couple has then participated in a mass and met relatives of the victims, survivors and members of the rescue teams. Since the massacre, the first testimonies of the students who emerged alive from the Robb school gave a glimpse of the nightmare they lived through. The delay in the intervention of the police at the scene of the shooting caused a strong controversy, and a mea culpa from the Texas authorities.
