The Russian shootings against the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, in Zaporijia (Ukraine), threw a chill on Friday March 4. In a press release, Jean-Luc Mélenchon urges France to ask the UN to send a “interposition force” to secure the Ukrainian power plants.

“The blue helmets would provide security in front of each power station by setting a buffer zone against the fighting”offers the candidate of La France insoumise (LFI) on his blog. “This event on which we had alerted in good time reminds us that civilian nuclear power is a possible and easy military target to reach in wars”, he wrote. In France, Jean-Luc Mélenchon is in favor of an eventual exit from civil nuclear power.

The United Kingdom called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday to discuss the situation in Zaporizhia, described as “threat to the security and stability of Europe” by the head of British diplomacy, Liz Truss.

The shootings in Zaporizhia caused a fire on the site of the plant, but it was brought under control. No radioactive leak has been observed, say both the Ukrainian authorities and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, offered to go to Chernobyl, a site which, like that of Zaporijia, is under the control of the Russian army.

Ukraine has fifteen reactors in operation, in four power plants. This is the first time that a military conflict has taken place in a country with a large civilian nuclear program.
