“It’s the worst time for oyster farmers”, deplores Thursday December 28 on franceinfo Xavier Daney, mayor of Arès, in Gironde. On Wednesday, December 27, the prefecture announced a ban on fishing, harvesting and marketing oysters from the Arcachon basin and the Banc d’Arguin, after several cases of norovirus contamination.

The period between Christmas and January 1 represents between “15 and 20 %” of the production of oyster farmers, recalls Xavier Daney, whose town is located in the Arcachon basin. He already fears “the extent of the consequences” of this ban for the profession, and is now asking for the support of the authorities, because“we won’t be able to cope alone”.

Must also “react quickly”according to the mayor, and “refine our analyses”to understand the origins of this contamination, and thus “avoid losing consumer confidence”. “The brand image cannot suffer”alerts Xavier Daney.
