“It’s scandalous, Monaco should not have let this happen,” deplored Monday, May 20 on franceinfo Yoann Lemaire, president of the Foot ensemble association, while the Malian midfielder of AS Monaco, Mohamed Camara, refused to join the day against homophobia during the last day of the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 football championships on Sunday. The player covered the rainbow logo affixed to his jersey with adhesive.

Associations fighting against homophobia have been working for several months with the Professional Football League (LFP) and the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) to prepare for this day. “I can’t understand why they let this happen. It’s a very bad signal sent to young people and to all those who are committed against homophobia. They absolutely must intervene and set an example with firmness”, explains Yoann Lemaire.

Mostafa Mohamed of FC Nantes was also absent from the field on Sunday evening, without knowing why. Last year, he was fined for refusing to participate in a day to fight homophobia. The Minister of Sports called for “strongest sanctions” against the Monegasque Mohamed Camara.

“We need firmness and otherwise we won’t get through this.”

Yoann Lemaire admits that “It’s a very complicated subject. We’re not going to lie, homosexuality is still very taboo” he said. “There are more and more problems with religions” Who “condemn homosexuality” (…) It’s getting worse and worse”, he said. But he wants to say “well done to all the other clubs who are taking action. There are still more than 200 players who have played with this jersey and it hasn’t been a problem”he emphasizes.
