The Montreal singer-songwriter Kallitechnis has ambition as well as a voice that is assertive and emphatic, occasionally reminiscent of Sia’s. Threading releases diligently since her debut single talk talk talk in 2017 (including a collaboration with rapper Lou Phelps and his brother Kaytranada), she presented last week a fourth mini-album, minimalist and more pop in its form than were the neo-R&B-soul songs of the previous EP Because It Feels Good launched last October. This restraint, in the interpretation and the orchestrations topped with synthesizers, is the fruit of two encounters. On the one hand, the one with Toronto composer and producer Jaylien — who sings on the excellent Closer to my Dreams and who co-wrote I’m not Crazy ; on the other hand, the one with the young pop-R&B duo Beach Season, originally from Calgary. These five new sober songs, which allows them to be embedded easily between our ears, leaving us the impression that the musician has what it takes to compete with the best of the pop planet.
