On the morning of Monday July 4, the search resumed around the glacier of the Marmolada in the Dolomites, Italy. On Sunday July 3, the collapse of part of this glacier killed at least six people and injured eight. This is one of the dramatic effects of global warming.

A gaping crevasse on the mountainside crisscrossed by rescue helicopters. In the afternoon of Sunday July 3, in a few seconds, more than half of the glacier of the Marmoladathe largest alpine glacier in the Italian Dolomites, has collapsed. Thousands of tons of ice and rocks were thrown at more than 200 km/h, and left no chance for the mountaineers who crossed their path. According to a provisional report, this collapse left six dead and eight injured.

The toll could still increase, on a terrain very difficult to access for rescuers. “The search for survivors continues with drones, while waiting to check the tightness of the rest of the glacier”explains Giovanni Bernard, mayor of the locality of Canazei (Italy). The instability of the glacier is linked to abnormally high temperatures, observed in recent weeks throughout the Alps. Since this collapse, a decree of danger prohibits access to this Italian summit to mountaineers.
