“It’s the triumph of the power of money”denounces Patrick Baudouin, the president of the League of Human Rights (LDH), on franceinfo Friday June 16, before the meeting between Emmanuel Macron and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed ben Salmane (MBS). “We can continue to have relationships without rolling out the red carpet to this extent to leaders like MBS who violate human rights”he believes.
A “certificate of respectability” awarded by France
According to the president of the LDH, “France is in the process of awarding a kind of patent of respectability” to a leader who is nevertheless suspected of having had the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi assassinated in 2018. He also castigates the “expedited trials”, THE “arbitrary arrests” and the “practice of torture and ill-treatment” taking place in Saudi Arabia. “We are ignoring respect for freedoms and human rights” for a “true rehabilitation” of Mohammed ben Salmane, gets carried away Patrick Baudouin.
“We do not need to give such strong symbols of reception to leaders who do not respect rights and freedoms”, adds Patrick Baudouin. He points to a constant in French foreign policy, citing the invitations of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, to the July 14 parades.
