The Israeli army launched an offensive on the town of Rafah, located in the south of the Gaza Strip. IDF tanks entered the city on Tuesday May 7 while, the day before, the Palestinian people were called to leave the area.

An Israeli soldier films his arrival at the border post. On Tuesday, May 7, IDF tanks took control of the most important crossing point into Gaza. The Israeli military provided drone footage, as if to underline the scale of the war prize. The offensive was accompanied by intense aerial bombardments, which killed at least 27 people, including children. Israeli tanks and vehicles did not enter the heart of the city of Rafah, but to the east, in a less populated area.

The UN demands its immediate reopening

The border crossing is a strategic hold because Israel says Hamas has smuggling tunnels there with Egypt. The offensive would only just begin. “Our soldiers within a few hours raised the Israeli flag at the crossing point,” declared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Most of the humanitarian aid for civilians arrives in the enclave through this Rafah crossing point. The UN is concerned about its closure, while the threat of famine looms. They demand their immediate reopening.
