New deadly attack on a school. The Gaza Civil Defense announced on Saturday, September 21, that an Israeli strike on a school hosting displaced people in Gaza left 19 dead. Among these victims are: “13 children and six women” one of whom was pregnant, said Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal. “Over 30” people including “nine children” were injured in the bombing of the al-Zaytoun school, he added, noting that the school was hosting thousands of displaced people.
For its part, the Israeli army claims to have targeted fighters from the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas who were hiding there. It added that it had taken “measures to mitigate the risk of harm to civilians”including the use of precision weapons. Other schools in the Gaza Strip have been targeted in recent months by the IDF, which accuses Hamas of hiding fighters in school buildings where thousands of Gazans have sought refuge, something the Palestinian movement denies.
On September 11, the UN-run al-Jaouni school in the central Gaza Strip was targeted. The UN refugee agency said six of its employees were killed, among 18 reported victims.
