Israel, Hamas at War, Day 300 | Israeli military says Lebanon airstrike was only one in Middle East

(Beirut) The Israeli army said the airstrike that killed a senior Hezbollah official in Lebanon was the only one carried out by Israel in the Middle East on Tuesday night, during which the Hamas leader was killed in Tehran.

The military leader of the Lebanese armed movement Hezbollah, Fouad Chokr, was killed Tuesday evening by an Israeli strike on a building in a densely populated district of Beirut.

“We attacked on Tuesday night in Lebanon and eliminated Fouad Shokr in a targeted airstrike. I want to make it clear, there was no other Israeli air, missile or drone attack that night anywhere in the Middle East,” army spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said at a press conference on Thursday evening.

He was asked by a journalist whether he could confirm reports that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a bomb and not a missile.

Hamas and the Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, announced on Wednesday that Mr. Haniyeh had been killed by an Israeli airstrike. Israel did not comment.

Following the strikes against Hamas and Hezbollah, Iran and its allied groups in the Middle East are working on a coordinated response against Israel, but their response should remain measured with the aim of avoiding a regional conflagration, analysts believe.

On Wednesday, a meeting was held in Tehran between Iranian officials and representatives of their allied groups to coordinate their positions, according to a source close to Lebanese Hezbollah who was informed of the meeting and who requested anonymity.

“Two scenarios were discussed: a simultaneous response from Iran and its allies or a staggered response from each party,” the source added.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed Wednesday to inflict “severe punishment” on Israel, which it accused of killing Palestinian Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran that same day.
