Reports of attacks on secularism in schools are on the rise. But a vagueness remains around the religious nature of certain outfits.
Barely out of class, two young girls put on their veils on Thursday, October 13. Below, they wear an abaya, a long robe covering the legs and arms. Teenage girls say it’s not a problem for them in high school. For them, it is not a religious sign but a cultural one. If the abaya is singled out, it’s because the numbers have been climbing for a year. In one month, there were 313 reports of violations of the principles of secularism in 59,260 establishments. 54% relate to signs or clothing of a religious nature.
According to the Minister of Education, incentive videos on social networks are the cause of the phenomenon. The latter believes that the sanction must be made on a case-by-case basis. “We trust school leaders to judge whether dress is religious in nature“, he thus affirmed on the antenna of France 2. An instruction considered too vague by the unions of principals.
