Start of the season with a group that is not yet stabilized, the transfer window ends on September 1, and with a particularly young workforce. Should we see the paw of a David Guion more expert in L2 than in Ligue 1? The Bordeaux coach was voted best L2 coach in 2018 when he was French champion with Stade de Reims with incredible statistics: 28 wins from 38 games and a goal difference of +50 !
Coaches from league 1 and others from league 2?
From there to ask the question there is only one step: would some coaches be cut out for the L2 and not for the L1? No for the President of the FC Coteaux LibournaisJean-Marie Bijotat
I think it’s perhaps a bit simplistic because we are coaches, we are coaches. After all, it all depends on how many staff you have. It all depends on the situation you are in. David Guion arrived in a context that could not be more fragile. And he didn’t work a miracle, of course, but hey, he has serious references to his past in Reims and we can think that he particularly appreciates this start to the season when he launches youngsters while knowing full well that he will be forced to have much more experienced players to supervise all these young people. But a coach is a coach, he is a man of challenges, he is a builder and he is someone who likes challenges – Jean-Marie Bijotat
A coach dependent on his environment
Beyond David Guion, this idea that managers could be more suited to an L1 vs L2 type championship has often been mentioned about Jean-Marc Furlan who is the only coach with five promotions from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1 and has won two UNFP Trophies of the Best Ligue 2 Coach but who has always had difficult seasons in Ligue 1. For the Girondin Noureddine Bouachera who has worked a lot with JM Furlan in Libourne or Troyes, the coach must deal with his environment
The coach is very dependent on the institution but also on the staff for which he is responsible. And indeed, if we take Guion today, he did a very good job. He was certainly a little less successful in Ligue 1 than in Ligue 2, but he still held his own with Reims and he had very good results at the Stade de Reims. And as far as Jean-Marc Furlan is concerned, he has always had staff with the smallest payroll and then always with the level of club ambitions, to play maintenance and not to go down. I would like to see this kind of coach in more upscale clubs, with players and staff of another caliber – Noureddine Bouacherra.
A workforce that will have to be reinforced according to Noureddine Bouachera, who is currently the assistant to Senegal coach Aliou Cissé, to obtain a balance between experienced players and ambitious young players. Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Matmut Atlantique, the Girondins face one of the many candidates for the climb: Guingamp. Definitely a first big test.
