In its programme for the legislative elections, the New Popular Front wanted to freeze the prices of basic necessities. Is this possible?

If the New Popular Front manages to govern, freezing prices would be one of its priorities to ease purchasing power. For food, the prices of about fifty basic products would be capped, such as pasta, sugar or oil. The prices of fuel, gas and electricity could also be frozen.

This measure is legal, because the law authorizes by decree the freezing of prices, only in a crisis situation and for six months. The left claims that this price freeze will only weigh on companies that will have to reduce their margins. Some producers could decide to sell their stock more expensively, elsewhere than in France. The measure aims to redistribute purchasing power, particularly to the poorest. According to a recent study, the gain could amount to an average of 631 euros per household for the year. The wealthiest would benefit more in terms of fuel prices.
