It is clear that Vladimir Putin’s army is concentrating its military efforts on two main fronts: the Donbass in the east and the southern region all around Crimea, annexed in 2014 by Moscow. On the first front, Russia has gained ground and has been controlling the Luhansk area for a few days. But to complete his conquest, his objective is to take the region of Donetsk and Sloviansk, and probably further north the city of Kharkiv. But there, it will be necessary to set up a long siege.
On the southern front, several large cities have already fallen, such as Melitopol and especially Kherson, at the mouth of the Dnieper River. Now it is the turn of the city of Mykolaiv further west to be in the crosshairs of the Russian army.
The Ukrainians resist and counter-attack but lack armament against the steamroller of Moscow, which certainly also suffers heavy losses but advances inexorably. In short, the disaster scenario for Ukraine is coming true: that of the loss of control of a large territorial crescent running from the Donbass in the east to the south-west of the country. And to date, Russia has already taken over 20% of Ukrainian territory.
In the occupied zones, Vladimir Poutine will carry out a policy of “Russification”. We can already see this process at work in the recently conquered city of Kherson. The ruble has been introduced, Russian passports are issued, a first Russian bank has just opened its doors.
