Friday June 3, the 20 Hours newscast did an experiment. Buy the same three products in supermarkets in France, Belgium, Italy and Germany in order to compare their prices.
Spaghetti, oil, butter… In France, buying these three products costs 6.40 euros and their prices have increased by 20% in one year. In France, food prices are up 4.2% in one year. In Belgium, since the start of the war in Ukraine, many oil shelves have been empty in supermarkets. For a bottle of oil, butter and pasta, the Belgian basket amounts to 6.64 euros. In Belgium, inflation is approaching 9%. The shortage of oil caused an increase in the price of French fries, which was strongly noticed in the country.
In Berlin (Germany), pasta, butter and oil cost 5.17 euros. In the country, food prices have increased by 11% in one year. Here, the price of cucumber has exploded by 30%. In Italy, you have to pay 5.50 euros for pasta, oil and butter. In this country, the inflation rate on food products is about 10% over one year. Italian average salaries are 20% lower than those in France.
