Iran has denied accusations of involvement in plots to assassinate former US President Donald Trump, but has raised concerns about pursuing legal action over the 2020 killing of a revered general by a US drone strike, the official IRNA news agency reported on Wednesday.
IRNA quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani as saying that Iran “firmly rejects any involvement in the recent armed attack on Trump or any claims regarding Iran’s intention for such action.”
Mr. Kanaani added, however: “The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to take legal action against Trump for his direct role in the crime of assassinating Martyr General Qassem Soleimani.”
General Soleimani was the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force and was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in January 2020.
A threat to Mr. Trump’s life from Iran prompted increased security measures days before Saturday’s campaign rally, but it was unrelated to the assassination attempt on the Republican presidential candidate, two U.S. officials said Tuesday.
Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, on Tuesday rejected the accusations against Tehran, calling them “baseless” and “politically motivated.”
