International Friendship Day

Today is International Friendship Day. You did not know it ? You have to believe that the day is as discreet as the true friend.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed July 30 as the International Day of Friendship, to remember that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals inspires efforts for peace and provides an opportunity to bridges between communities. It’s a very diplomatic formulation of friendship. There would be much more emotive ways to define it.

Friendship is the human relationship at its finest, greatest. We are born, being ourselves, we discover the world and things, we want everything for ourselves, then we understand that we have to share with others. Live with others. With many it is an effort, with some it is a pleasure. They are the friends. Those to be with is good. Those with whom we want to be. Those with whom we want to live.

There is no typical friendship. Of model. Instructions for use. As for love: dating, dwelling, reproduction. There are as many friendship prototypes as there are friends. There are everyday ones. There are those of the exceptional. The ones you see all the time. Those we see from time to time. Those that we never see, but that we see again, one day, as if we had always seen them, because they have never ceased to be in our thoughts.

There are those with whom we force ourselves, those with whom we let ourselves go. Those with whom we get lost. Those with whom we meet. Those with whom we do both.

Friends are, initially, strangers in the same place, at the same time. People at school, people at work, people at the campsite, people at the gym, people at the dog park, people on our way. Suddenly they become people with first names, people with addresses, people with stories, people with dates with us. It is first a place that introduces us to friends, then it is friends that introduce us to places. Places that will always make us think of them.

Now, you can even worry about it while staying at home. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or TikTok friends. We see everything they want to show. We comment, we congratulate, we put hearts and thumbs. It’s fun. It tames. But it’s when you see them for real that it becomes real.

In the end, it’s all a matter of time. It’s the time you’ve wasted on your rose that makes your rose so important, said Saint-Ex. Friends are those with whom we chill, said the teenager. Same conclusion.

When things are going well, we are sure that we have plenty. When things go wrong, we realize how much we have. And it’s always thanks to those that one day, things are going well, once again.

International Friendship Day is a good idea. Too bad it’s not known. Love has its February 14, friendship deserves its July 30. It is sure that the event is more complicated to manage. If, on Valentine’s Day, we are supposed to send only one bouquet, two, if we play dangerous, on the friendship day, we may run out. Four ? Eight ? Twelve ?

Of course, we could celebrate only the most faithful, the most complicit, the best. But do we really know which ones they are? We might be surprised. Often the friend to whom we thought we were less close becomes the most precious, when fate stirs a little. In short, there are no friendships to neglect. As soon as bonds are created, as soon as souls are touched, anything can happen. Some bloom later than others, but they fade less quickly.

So, what do we do today, now that we know what day it is?

We can simply start. A little text: “It’s International Friendship Day, thank you for being my friend. »

You will tell me: you don’t need the United Nations to do that. Okay, that’s right. But did you do it yesterday? Last week ? This year ? Otherwise, it sucks. If so, we never do enough.

And as far as friendship between peoples is concerned, we must above all not rely on heads of state, whoever they may be. It is up to us to take the first steps. For a small reconciliation or a great reconciliation.

The only way to change the world is to become his friend.

Happy International Friendship Day!
