Injured, Matteo Berrettini withdraws from Roland-Garros

(Rome) The Italian Matteo Berrettini, victim of a muscle injury in the abdomen during the Monte-Carlo tournament in April, withdrew Saturday for Roland-Garros, and announced his return in June for the season on grass.

“I will not be ready in time for Paris so my return to the circuit will be at the Stuttgart tournament” scheduled for June 12 to 18, wrote on Instagram Berrettini, who is defending champion in Germany.

Twentieth player in the world, the 27-year-old had given up before his round of 16 in Monte-Carlo in April against the Dane Holger Rune, after having fought three long sets the day before to eliminate the Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo. The ATP had announced that he was suffering from abdominal muscles.

Berrettini has won four of his seven grass titles and reached the final at Wimbledon in 2021.
