In 2023, 318 home-jackings were recorded in France, or almost one per day, according to this same police note. Some are particularly high-profile: the influencer Just Riadh in February, the chef Jean-François Piège in January or the footballer Alexandre Letellier in December.
The profile of the criminals
Behind these violent burglaries are sometimes hidden order givers with serious criminal records. These sponsors who target influencers, business leaders, athletes or even presenters by spotting them in particular on social networks. They look for ostentatious signs of wealth such as watches, jewelry but also luxury cars. These principals sometimes even take care of the logistics and transport of the teams to the target home.
Burglars-robbers are paid by the task and most often act in the morning, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., or at the end of the day between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Unlike a classic burglary, it is indeed necessary to ensure the presence of the occupants. The perpetrators act in groups, mostly three, with one of them sometimes posing as a worker, a neighbor or a delivery man. According to the police note, most of the time these are perpetrators known to the police, young people between 16 and 25 years old.
